To start off, let me just send my deepest and sincerest apologies for the hot awkward mess of a selfie that had to be included below. With my computer as my witness, I promise you, friends and family, that these types of photos are no more. However, desperate times call for desperate measures.
So, as you might be able to conclude from that introduction, this is the one and ONLY "before" photo I have of this dress and, since I really was proud of the transformation, I had to just bite the bullet and include it.
I stumbled across this gem at the large Goodwill just south of me near North Riverside and two things struck me about it; the pattern and the skirt. The pattern reminded me of the Kentucky Derby, which was sweet, and the skirt was long and flowy, PERFECT for the blistering hot Chicago summer.
Clearly the top was just offensive and had to be changed. So, out came the shoulder pads (why does everything I buy have shoulder pads.....) and the sleeves came off. Going along with the Kentucky Derby theme, I thought a sweetheart halter top would look fab. In order to create the sweetheart look without the effort/sewing skills, I decided to turn the dress 180 so the back was the front, buttoned up the first two buttons, then pinched and sewed the fabric in place near my armpits. After that, I cut the remaining fabric into three sections, which were braided then tied together at the nape of the neck. After trimming the excess fabric covering my shoulder blades and sewing some elastic in the back to keep the top on, I was ready to go!
The end!
